If you need more power and performance than available from a standard pickup, a heavy-duty truck is a great alternative. You can configure them as basic work trucks or luxurious vehicles. Two leading heavy-duty trucks are the 2018 Ram 2500 and the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. Both are built for professional use, with extra towing and payload capacity. Deciding which of these brawny trucks is the right one for you requires close comparison and test-drives. We’re confident you’ll end up choosing the Ram 2500 for its superior value.

Powertrain

The 2018 Ram 2500 base engine overpowers the one on the 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500HD. The Ram’s standard engine is a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. You can step up to a heavy-duty 6.4-liter Hemi V8 with 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. For torque freaks, there’s the legendary 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel I6 with 370 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque. The Silverado base engine is a 6.0-liter V8 with 360 horsepower and 389 lb-ft, and the upgraded unit is the 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 with 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft.

Storage

Only Ram offers the RamBox Cargo Management System. This durable, drainable and secure box is built into the side rails of the truck bed. If you want extra convenience, get the AllSecure Central Locking System that controls the cargo box and the other car locks via a pushbutton. The RamBox includes lighting, bed extender/divider, and four adjustable cleats for tying down cargo to the bed rails. If you need more light, order LED bed lighting. If you want more security, check the box for the cargo-view camera. One more thing: The Chevy’s under-floor storage compartments are smaller than the Ram’s.

Uconnect System

Another exclusive Ram feature is the Uconnect System with the available 8.4-inch touchscreen. For 2018, Uconnect is beefed up with 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. Other features include hands-free calling, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, and navigation.
